Akshay Kumar Says If Your Films Don’t Work, It’s Your Fault and Time to Change

Akshay Kumar takes responsibility for the underwhelming opening of his latest film Selfiee, stating that he believes the failure of a movie is his own fault.
In light of his recent string of unsuccessful films, Akshay Kumar acknowledges the need for self-reflection and personal growth. He admits that this is not a new experience for him and fully accepts the responsibility for the box office disappointment of his movies.
Akshay Kumar’s most recent box office success was in 2021 with the release of Sooryavanshi, the fourth installment in Rohit Shetty’s ‘cop universe’. Co-starring Katrina Kaif and featuring cameos from Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn, the film was a hit with audiences.
Akshay Kumar acknowledged his recent string of unsuccessful films in an interview with Aaj Tak, stating that it is not the first time he has experienced a similar situation. He reflected on a time in his career when he had 16 consecutive flops and another time when he had eight films in a row that did not work.
He took responsibility for the poor performance of his recent movies and recognized the need for self-improvement and adaptation to changing audience preferences. Kumar emphasized the importance of starting fresh and delivering something new to capture the audience’s attention.
According to Akshay Kumar, the consecutive failures of a film are a clear indication that something needs to change. He emphasized that as a filmmaker, it is his responsibility to take ownership of the situation, rather than blaming the audience or others. Kumar admitted that he is making an effort to adapt and evolve to better serve the audience’s expectations.
He cautioned against blaming the audience for a film’s failure and instead urged filmmakers to reflect on the ingredients they provide to their films. Kumar emphasized that the onus is on filmmakers to deliver a compelling story with the right ingredients to engage the audience.
Following the pandemic-induced lockdown and restrictions, Akshay Kumar’s BellBottom became the first major film to release in theatres, followed by his collaboration with Rohit Shetty, Sooryavanshi, which also emerged as the first Hindi box office hit post-pandemic.
However, all of his films released in theatres since 2022 have failed to generate significant revenue. Both Raksha Bandhan and Samrat Prithviraj, released last year, were box office disappointments. His most recent film, Selfiee, opened on February 24 to a disappointing collection of less than ₹3 crore on the first day.
