About Pakistan power outage
The districts of Turbat, Panjgur, and Gwadar in Pakistan’s Makran division have experienced a severe power outage after Iran temporarily ceased its electricity supply, according to Dawn. Despite efforts made by the Quetta Electricity Supply Company (Qesco), only 20MW of the original 100MW provided by Iran was restored on Monday. A spokesperson for Qesco stated that the limited power restoration came about after Pakistani officials reached out to their Iranian counterparts.
Mohammed Afzal Baloch reported that Makran has only been receiving 20MW out of the 100MW of electricity for the past 24 hours and that Iranian officials have not provided an explanation for the reduction. The Gwadar Development Authority Director General, Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Qambarani, previously announced that the region would receive an additional 100MW of electricity from Iran starting March 1, which would result in a 24/7 power supply and a boost to the industry, tourism, and real estate in Gwadar.
Pakistan and Iran power supply deal
According to news reports, Pakistan and Iran signed a deal in June 2022 to supply an additional 100 megawatts of electricity. During a visit to Gwadar, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed relevant authorities to expedite the completion of the project. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) had previously approved the construction of a 132 kV transmission line from Jiwani to Gwadar, with the government set to allocate PKR 2,322.940 million for its establishment. It is noted that Gwadar relies on imported electricity from Iran.
